There is so much value in preparing opportunities for learning that are student centered. I totally get the need for rich discussion and disequilibrium. But honestly there is a big shift of learning control going on in my brain right now; especially for my work with upper elementary students. If I am giving them the recipe how will there be a need to negotiate meaning? I will work on this! And this means lab sheets are for the birds! What is more important is that the question is identified, a claim is made, and evidence is collected. Lab notebooks have a whole new role right now!","dateCreated":"1309398587","smartDate":"Jun 29, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"jlafayette","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/jlafayette","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"40640395","body":"I will focus on questioning because I need to become more consistent with it. I start off asking "What do you think?", but then I usually give in and explain the answer. I will plan to write down questions about the topic that will make students think: Why?, What do you think?, Do you agree with Billy? I plan to make a copy of Appendix D ( How Do I Question the Students?) and leave it in my plan book for review during the year.","dateCreated":"1309718708","smartDate":"Jul 3, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"tdorn","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/tdorn","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"40672095","body":"I chose this group work for an area of improvement because the negotiation process requires communication between all students. This is the crux of the inquiry approach. Next year there will be a variety of student interactions\u2014individual, small group, and large group, with less of my input. I will strive to have an environment where everyone feels safe to express their thoughts and challenge others. Some students may need time to write or to rehearse what they will say. But, let the learner control the learning.","dateCreated":"1309900790","smartDate":"Jul 5, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"dbullock1","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/dbullock1","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"40688111","body":"My focus this upcoming school year is going to be questioning. I find myself quick to give the answers or find the answers. I need to focus on ask the students "why?", and "what do you think?". My goal is to post these questions by my clock as a reminder, I foresee me trying to use them in all of the subject areas.
\n
\nAn aha! for me was the Starburst questions that the students do in my classroom. Normally they research the question, they bring me an answer on a sticky note, I give them a Starburst if they are right. I think this could be a whole group negotiation on the researched answer.
\n
\nFinally, the book said that "our questioning needs to challenge them to explain how they are connecting the bits of information". After monitoring the ITBS this year in third grade, I realized that a lot of the Science is connections. Barb and I plan to send home a Concepts Connections sheet at the end of each theme, and they can questions others about how their science concepts relate to the world in different ways.","dateCreated":"1309973487","smartDate":"Jul 6, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"JPudenz","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/JPudenz","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"41094143","body":"My focus is going to be group work. I need to work extra hard on challenging the groups thinking. There have been times in which I see a group working wonderfully so I leave them alone to continue to work. Instead of walking by and smiling, I need to listen and then challenge their thoughts through questioning and seeking answers.
\n
\nI also like the idea of having students put their ideas on butcher paper to hang up so all can see. The goal of small groups is to be negotiation across the entire class. I want to have a non-threatening, comfortable environment in which student's confidence will grow along with their knowledge and understanding.","dateCreated":"1311898648","smartDate":"Jul 28, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"karensawhill1","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/karensawhill1","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}}],"more":0}]}],"more":false},"comments":[]},"http":{"code":200,"status":"OK"},"redirectUrl":null,"javascript":null,"notices":{"warning":[],"error":[],"info":[],"success":[]}}
