I know that I have to think things through so much more carefully when I want to communicate with others in writing.

\nWhen kids want to communicate something to someone they have a purpose to write and a need to make their writing understandable. My role is to build a classroom where children can write to learn and learn to write. In order to motivate them, give them choices, freedom, and opportunities whether it\u2019s the form, materials, or topic. Give them time to reflect, share, and receive feedback. My job is to model writing and then to guide and facilitate. Using the writing process and the 6-traits of writing are also ways to support student writing. How can I give them time? I believe that this can occur not only during science time, but can be integrated into the literacy block. And, finally, writing should be fun!","dateCreated":"1309900897","smartDate":"Jul 5, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"dbullock1","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/dbullock1","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"40932255","body":"Language should be used as a learning tool. Having a science connection really gives the students a purpose for their writing.

\nI do think that I am going to post the quote from the second grade teacher and talk about it multiple times a year with the class, to she how their understanding of her thoughts have grown throughout the year. "Ya know, when I write, I think, and when I think, then I have to write more, and if I write more, then I think more and wow, my brain is just going to keep growing and growing-it just goes round and round: write, think, write, think, think, write!","dateCreated":"1311130803","smartDate":"Jul 19, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"JPudenz","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/JPudenz","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"41157711","body":"Language is essential to learning. The strongest point this chapter has shown is that language is not always communicated orally. Students are able to process their thoughts and the thoughts of others through communication and language.

How much simpler can it get? If you are studying student generated questions around a content area it makes sense to students to read and write to find answers. Without writing there is no science means that there would be limit to the engagement of students.
